Lucas Schaffer
Lucas Schaffer joined Northern in 2015 working with GIS and is now the Environmental Manager.
Lucas Schaffer joined the District in 2015 as a GIS Intern and has since advanced to lead environmental initiatives as the Environmental Manager, guiding the management and restoration of natural preserves, lakes, canals, created wetlands, and uplands across the District. In this role, Lucas oversees critical projects and contracts focused on invasive species control, nutrient management, and habitat enhancement, ensuring sustainable stewardship of South Florida's natural resources.
Lucas holds a Master of Science in Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Science in Geology, both from Florida Atlantic University, where he also earned Certificates in Environmental Restoration and GIS. He has completed specialized training as an Authorized Gopher Tortoise Agent, equipping him with the expertise needed to survey, trap, transport, and relocate this protected species under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) guidelines. This experience is an asset in his work within sensitive habitats supporting gopher tortoise populations. Additionally, Lucas is a licensed herbicide applicator for aquatic and natural areas and certified in Green Industries Best Management Practices, equipping him to maintain healthy and resilient ecosystems.
As a licensed FAA Part 107 drone pilot, Lucas established the District’s UAS program, which now plays a vital role in monitoring and data collection for land management efforts. His expertise with ESRI ArcGIS systems enables him to create and manage geospatial databases, design maintenance programs, and develop mapping tools that support data-driven decision-making throughout the District.
Lucas's commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable management reflects a decade of experience in conservation, ecology, and invasive species control, with the goal of preserving South Florida’s diverse ecosystems for future generations.
